1948 North Korean Parliamentary Election

Background

The 1948 North Korean parliamentary election was held on 25 August 1948 to elect the members of the 1st Supreme People's Assembly. The election was organized by the People's Committee of North Korea and saw 572 deputies elected, of which 212 were from North Korea and 360 from South Korea.

Results

North Korea

In North Korea, the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) won a majority of seats in the Supreme People's Assembly. The WPK was led by Kim Il-sung, who became the first Premier of North Korea.

South Korea

In South Korea, the election was held under the supervision of the United Nations. The National Association for the Rapid Realization of Korean Independence (NARRKI) won a majority of seats in the National Assembly. The NARRKI was led by Syngman Rhee, who became the first President of South Korea.
