Senate Dismisses Articles of Impeachment Against Mayorkas

House Narrowly Voted to Impeach Homeland Security Chief

Senate Blocks Trial, Ending Impeachment Case

On Wednesday, the US Senate voted to dismiss both articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The vote fell along party lines, with all Democrats and one Republican voting against the articles. The Senate had been considering the impeachment case since it was formally referred by the House of Representatives in February.

Mayorkas was impeached by the House on charges of failing to secure the southern border and of refusing to implement Trump-era immigration policies. However, the Senate's vote to dismiss the articles means that Mayorkas will not be removed from office. As of today, he is still serving as Homeland Security Secretary.

The impeachment and dismissal of Mayorkas has been a highly partisan affair. Republicans have accused Mayorkas of being soft on immigration, while Democrats have defended him as a competent and effective leader. The Senate's vote is likely to further divide the two parties, as both sides are likely to use the impeachment as a campaign issue in the upcoming midterm elections.
